I am very saddened to learn that Professor Sperling passed away suddenly. I was able to go to Indiana University to further my scholarship due to his support when he was the head of the Department of Central Eurasian Studies. He was such a great intellectual with in-depth knowledge, compassion and integrity. I admired his passion for the subject he studied all his life, Tibetan people. He was always able to help and support whenever I asked for. He organised a tour of Tibetan Cultural Centre and personally took us there. What a loss for the humanity, for the Tibetan Studies, for people like us, and for his daughter, his mother in New York, and his entire family. Rest in Peace Professor Sperling. I am sure you will be missed by many people..

I am not sure how to find the words. The recent passing of Professor Sperling is deeply saddening to me. Foremost, condolences to his family, close friends, former students, and those influenced by him in this life. He was one of my professors in my undergraduate program at Indiana University. His teachings sparked great interest in me in regards to the history and plight of the Tibetan people. I remember him to be so passionate and full of life. He is probably one of the most intelligent beings I have come into contact with. He was always so gracious whenever I would see him. I was blessed to run into him during New Year’s Eve 2001 Tibetan party in NYC. I have attached a photo of us here during that time. He made a huge impression on my journey and I am forever grateful. May he rest in immense peace…
