OBITUARY
Ruth Landy (née Friedes) passed away at the age of 96 years on March 27, 2023, at her home in Bay Shore, NY, surrounded by family and friends. Born in a Lower East Side tenement and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she was the third of four children of Harry and Frieda Friedes. Like so many other women of her remarkable generation, from humble beginnings and with limited resources, she lived through the Great Depression and World War II, accepting challenges gladly and always seeking to create a better and more prosperous world for all. Hers was one of the founding families of the Elmont Jewish Center in Elmont, NY. She served as President of the local chapter of B’nai B’rith, and she volunteered in community reading programs for disadvantaged children. With her first husband, Bob, to whom she was married for 34 years until his premature death in 1984, she raised two children, traveled widely, undertook countless home projects, and hosted innumerable holiday and social get-togethers. The door to her home was always open and her home filled with love. As her children grew older, she enrolled in college, receiving an Associate’s degree from Nassau Community College and later a Bachelor of Science degree at SUNY Downstate Medical College. She worked for two decades in medical records administration, ultimately serving as Director of Medical Records at Central General Hospital in Plainview, NY, where she mentored a new generation of professional women. In her later years, she regularly hosted afternoon teas at her home at the Admiralty in Bay Shore, NY, where she and her friends, the Platinum Girls, met for hours on end to solve the world’s problems. She is survived by her brother Albert Friedes and his wife, Marilyn; her daughter, Pamela Phillips and her husband, Neil Phillips, and her son, Hal Landy, MD and his partner, Deborah Ramsdell; grandchildren Lisa Schachter, Robert Schachter, Alex Landy, MD, and his wife, Julia, and great-granddaughter, Lark Olivia Landy, Stephen Landy and his wife, Yiwei Li, and Mark Landy, MD, PhD and his wife, Shanna Landy, DVM.
