Our hearts go out to the Steinhandler family. Walter was one of the founding teachers at Edward R. Murrow high school. His years of service to the school community will always be remembered.

Walter was my colleague in the Physical Education Department at E.R. Murrow H.S. He was an excellent teacher and an intelligent, warm and genuine human being. He truly loved to live life! I am so thankful to have worked with him for so many years.

Hi Phyl & family, Evelyn just told me the unbearable news. Our hearts are broken. I loved Walter more than a brother and only wish I had told him so when we were together. There are no words to express our feelings. We have such wonderful memories of laughing together and enjoying each other’s company. He was such a passionate guy especially when it came to you, his kids and grandkids. The memories we have of going out to dinners and playing tennis (though he always beat me) are ever present in my mind. I will miss him greatly! I only wish we had more time together. I wish I texted him less and called him more. I wish I told him what a great friend he was and how much I admired him. May you, his children and grandchildren always be blessed with Walters passion, wisdom, love and sense of humor. May you and your entire family be comforted in knowing how much he loved you and how much he was loved. May he be greeted in heaven by Hashem as a wonderful husband, terrific father and father in law and loving grandfather. Our prayers
are with you and your family. May the memories of you and Walter bring you comfort.
All our love,
Morris & Evelyn

I taught with Walter in the Physical Education Department at Murrow for 27 years. He was a good friend and a dedicated teacher. He was innovative and enjoyed engaging his students and working with his colleagues to achieve great outcomes. I am truly saddened to learn of his passing. My deepest condolences to your family.

Walter was a colleague and friend since we began working together at Edward R. Murrow HS in January of 1976. We saw each other almost every day and went on numerous weekend trips over the years. Through those trips, mostly to Quebec, Canada, Walter opened up a world that most of our students had never seen. His concern and love for his students, and his friendship toward his colleagues were acknowledged by all. I am deeply saddened by this terrible news. We are all richer for having known him.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Walter. Walter and I were colleagues at E.R. Murrow H.S. I will always remember him as a true and dedicated professional . I could always count on his straight forward honesty and wonderful sense of humor. I know that he loved and cherished his family, deeply. My heart goes out to them at this time of great loss. May all be comforted by their memories of Walter.

Mr. Steinhandler was my gym teacher for many classes. He was a big part of when E.R. Murrow HS opened in the fall of 1974. My prayers and sympathies to all the members of the family. May he live in the Lord’s light and peace.

I just stumbles upon this 2 and a half years later. I am so sorry to hear this. Walter was a great gym teacher. I took gym hockey class with him numerous times. I even created a reenactment cassette tape of one of the games which he said he listened to while driving and told me was brilliantly done. I am from the class of 1991! People often wonder where people are that they haven’t seen for decades. It could be anyone. Murrow was a great place during that time. Paul Kadisch, Barry Oster, Grace Pallotta, and even Mrs Tripodi along with many others were legendary teachers. It was still pre internet/pre cell phone era. Life was simple! Mr Oster handed out those floppy discs like they were candy. I miss those simple times. Once again, I am deeply sorry for the passing of Walter
